The Middle Years Programme

Bladins International School of Malmö is authorised by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) to teach the Middle Years Programme (MYP).

The three main pillars of the MYP are holistic learning, intercultural awareness, and communication. Holistic learning enables the students to see natural links between the individual subject areas and the world around them. Students who exhibit intercultural awareness mature to become adults who are able to appreciate others cultures. This allows them to have tolerance and respect for others, as well as develop empathy and understanding as they see others’ rights to be different. Communication, both verbal and non-verbal allows, students to value all forms of communication, including different language, the written word, and the arts, as forms of expression.

The curriculum is divided onto eight subject areas:

  • Language A: Language A is the language of instruction. The IB allows the programme to be taught in English, Spanish, French, and Chinese. The language of instruction at Bladins is English.

  • Language B: This is an additional language that is learned. For most of the students this is Swedish. Students also study a third language, usually French or Spanish.

  • Humanities: The Humanities include both geography and history. At Bladins this is taught as an integrated course.

  • Sciences: Science is taught as an integrated course in the first two years of the program (MYP 1 and MYP 2). The final three years separate course in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics are required.

  • Mathematics: Mathematics covers five branches of math: algebra, geometry, trigonometry, probability and statistics, and discrete mathematics.

  • Arts: The arts are taught in both senses of performing arts and visual arts. Students undertake courses in drama, music, and art.

  • Physical Education: In this course, students are helped to develop motor skills necessary to participate in a variety of activities. The importance of regular exercise is stressed.

  • Technology: Technology is another place for students to display ingenuity and creativity. At Bladins this includes computer technology, design technology, and systems technology.

The Areas of Interaction give the MYP its distinctive core and reflect the focus of the programme. They are not taught as individual subjects, but are rather the framework around which the entire programme is based.

Approaches to Learning is concerned with providing the students with the tools they need so they are able to be responsible for their own learning both now and in the future. Environment helps students become aware of the resources we have or need, and their individual responsibility to conserving them.
Health and Social Education looks at both the physical and mental well-being of the individual.
Homo Faber (Man the Maker) examines both man’s positive and negative creative influences on the world.
Community and Service encourages participation in the local school, moving outward to the local community and finally to the world at large.

Cross-curricular projects form an integral part of the learning experience where natural links occur. This enables students to perceive knowledge as a multifaceted experience and to realize that subjects do not exist in isolation.

In the final year of the programme all students are assigned the task of doing a personal project. The personal project is a significant body of work which is a product of the students own initiative and creativity. It should reflect a student's personal understanding of the areas of interaction. It involves planning, research and a great deal of self motivation.
